Tacoma Power's Rates, Planning, and Analysis (RPA) department is seeking a talented Data Analyst to join our Budget Team! The Budget Team within RPA operates in a fast-paced environment, supporting Tacoma Power's biennial budget development while creating and improving processes and analyses related to budget monitoring and management.
As the Budget Data Analyst, you will perform a lead role in making data and information available to all levels of the organization through accurate reporting, development of new data sources, creation of sustainable data processes and queries, as well as visual storytelling. The ideal candidate will be a detail-oriented problem-solver who is challenge motivated, creative, and committed to delivering ever-increasing value to our internal stakeholders.

In addition to the day-to-day work, this position is expected to perform as a Subject Matter Expert and advisor on budget data and information within the organization, ensuring staff can make the best use of available analytical resources.
The individual selected for this position will join the broader Rates, Planning, & Analysis (RPA) team. Made up of high-performing critical thinkers, RPA is dedicated to continuous learning, innovation, and cross-functional collaboration. The department uses these strengths to best serve Tacoma Power and its ratepayers in financial stewardship, forecasting, and other analytical areas.

This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement upon the completion and approval of a telework request.

Responsibilities:
This position is primarily responsible for the complex design and development of business intelligence tools, data collection mechanisms, data validation, dashboards, metrics, and reports in support of Tacoma Power's Budget program and overarching financial strategy. This involves:

  • The preparation of complex financial and operational dashboards, reports, and presentations for staff at all levels, including senior leaders;
  • The identification of dashboard/model requirements and data collection needs and the creation of analytical solutions;
  • Partnering with stakeholders and management to design business intelligence models, dashboards, metrics and reports;
  • Assisting leadership with decision-making by producing dashboards, visuals and reports, and making recommendations based on the information;
  • Serving as an internal consultant and liaison with Tacoma Power Sections to provide budget program guidance.

Qualifications
Minimum Education*
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics or directly related field.

Minimum Experience*
2 years of experience in statistical analysis, forecasting, or financial/operational modeling.

*Equivalency: 1 year of directly related work experience = 1 year of relevant higher education

Knowledge & Skills
The ideal candidate would thrive in an environment that requires the ability to both collaborate/work with a team and to work independently on large work efforts. Additionally, they would have the following skills:

  • Data analysis and visual storytelling
  • Developing logical and consistent systems/processes
  • Proficiency with SQL language or an equivalent programming language (e.g. Python, R, etc.) to analyze data and create accurate and sustainable data processes
  • Proficiency with Excel and experience with Tableau or a similar data visualization software
  • Ability to contribute positively to a diverse and inclusive team culture that values work/life balance

While no prior experience in these specific applications is required, the following are the primary software tools utilized in this position (other than Microsoft Suite): SAP, MySQL, Tableau, Smartsheet

Direct Deposit: Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.
