Tacoma Power's Power Management section has an opportunity for a Data Scientist to join our team. This position will be required to lead and directly engage in efforts to develop the most complex predictive and analytical models to support data driven decision making in support of Tacoma Power's participation in organized wholesale energy markets. This position will also be required to supervise and direct the work of senior data analysts engaged in model development and interpretation and analysis of model results to inform both operational and strategic decision making. Tacoma Power's stated mission is "We provide affordable and reliable electrical services." This position will lead the provision of both tactical and strategic analytical support to Tacoma Power's Trading and Systems Operations groups. The goal of that analytical support is to maximize the economic benefits of participating in organized energy markets while maintaining Tacoma Power's high standards of system reliability, all to the benefit of Tacoma's ratepayers.
Responsibilities include:
- Uses computer programming, statistical methodologies, and forecasting tools to develop and build complex predictive and analytical models. Models will be used to provide data driven decision making to support both framing strategic business scenarios and driving continuous operational improvement as related to organized wholesale energy market participation.
- Uses mathematical and statistical techniques to develop algorithms for use in collecting, analyzing, and detecting useful patterns, trends, and statistically significant relationships in the very large and disparate data sources required for, and resulting from, Tacoma Power's organized energy market participation.
- Develops, implements, and manages assigned programs, operations, and processes in support of Tacoma Power's strategic engagement and operations in centralized wholesale energy markets
- Supervises Principal Data Analysts in the development, improvement, and use of complex models for analysis and data driven decision making. Supervision includes monitoring work quality, counseling employees, resolving issues, conducting performance evaluations, and providing recommendations as to hiring, termination, discipline, and salary action.
Qualifications
Minimum Education*
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics or directly related field.
Minimum Experience*
6 years experience in statistical analysis or modeling that must include developing and building predictive data models, and 1 year supervisory/managerial or analytics experience as a Subject Matter Expert (SME)
Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements
Some Assignments:
North American Electric Reliability Corporation Critical Infrastructure Protection certification (NERCC-CIP)

*Equivalency: 1 year of experience = 1 year of education

Other Employment Information
Direct Deposit: Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.
Salary Increases: Based on satisfactory job performance, the City provides for a regular progression of salary increases for most classifications according to the salary schedule.
Union Affiliation: Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent service fees.
